IPv6 Deployment Trends among the Operators in the LAC Region

Over the past five years, IPv6 deployment has not been uniform among Internet operators in the region and significant differences have been observed in terms of infrastructure, technology updates, and support requirements of each organization. These are part of the conclusions included in the study titled The Behavior of Operators in Relation to IPv6 Deployment in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The report is part of a larger study on IPv6 deployment in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2020-2021, created and led by LACNIC and conducted by consulting firm SMC+ Digital Public Affairs (USA).

The chapter devoted to operators presents the main trends related to IPv6, including the organizations that have deployed the IPv6 protocol as well as those that have not.

The analysis considers two variables —potential business growth and availability of IPv4 addresses for each operator— and explores the incentives and benefits of operators who have opted to deploy IPv6, their opinions regarding the process, as well as the obstacles and enabling factors they encountered.

A total of 25 interviews were conducted with the largest Internet Service Providers (ISPs) (category L or above).

The full document discusses the technological and economic reasons why operators in Latin America and the Caribbean have chosen to deploy IPv6.
