Winners of the Digital Certificate Creation Contest

The activities planned for the #LACNIC36 LACNOG 2021 event included a Route Origin Authorization (ROA) Creation Contest organized by LACNOG’s Routing, Training, and NOG Working Groups with the support of ISOC, LACNIC, and LAC-IX. The goal of the activity was to promote RPKI adoption among operators across the region and thus favor actions that will improve and strengthen the Internet routing system.

After creating RPKI ROAs to protect a significant portion of their prefixes, 6 of the 37 participating organizations were named the winners of the contest (see table below).

Israel Rosas, one of the instructors who worked on the contest, mentioned that during the week of the event they had observed major progress among regional operators in terms of ROA creation.

On the first day of the event, organizers handed a registration form to each participant. Once the contest was over, autonomous system numbers were used to check via the MANRS laboratory that the ROAs had been properly created. Organizers also verified that the ROAs had been created during the week of the event.

To determine the winners of the contest, the organizers compared the information available through the MANRS observatory, RIPEstat, and LACNIC region tools (Mi LACNIC or NIR NIC.br and NIC.mx resource management systems).

Rosas invited operators to continue creating ROAs. “[This] helps make the Internet a safer place for everyone. Keep in touch with us, we will be more than happy to offer guidance ourselves or direct you to someone who can,” he concluded.
